Angels originally from St. Petersburg
Gray, shabby houses, rusty pipes, cracked asphalt and darkened snow. The city has cultivated in me a love for such a range ... It seems to me that due to the lack of color, the character is brighter.
One of the most famous masters of puppet art in St. Petersburg does not like to call his works dolls. Indeed, sculptures. And Roman Shustrov can rightfully be called a papier-mâché sculpture master. It was this material that became the main one in the work of the creator.
To the question “What is a doll for you?”, Roman replies: “Man. A decorative doll is probably the only object of art, except for a theatrical doll, of course, with whom you are talking. ”
St. Petersburg puppeteer Roman Shustrov creates his amazing dolls from ordinary papier-mâché. It would seem that such a simple and non-plastic material, but in his hands papier-mâché takes shape and character. What kind they are - his characters! Each has its own destiny, its own character, its own line of life.
Despite the monochrome, his works seem to glow from the inside: “I grew up in St. Petersburg, where gray, dilapidated houses, rusty pipes, cracked asphalt and darkened snow. The city has raised a love for me to such a range ... It seems to me that due to the lack of color, the character is more clearly visible, ”explains Shustrov.
In our everyday life filled with daily cares, they seem strange and mystical.
But the angels of Roman are not sublimely inaccessible, as in the pictures of baroque masters, but earthly, quiet, as if lost in the veils of the material and pour remembering, touchingly peering into the heavens, about their former home.
They are similar to us, or rather, to a cast from our soul, entangled in the seductive brightness of the commodity world, but inexorably striving for that otherworldly beauty in which it was originally.
It is impossible to determine exactly what the Roman dolls are: symbols, parables, allegories, and it is not necessary, because what is available to a rational explanation has already ceased to be art, whose true nature is fragility, ambiguity, giving rise to many interpretations, and innumerable interpretations - its generic feature.
The purpose of the real master is to remind people of the “worlds of others”, clinging to his consciousness, causing him to fall out of the mechanical everyday existence and see what the beauty, subtlety, the memory of the true nature of things brings to him.
The images of the dolls are not instructive, they are warm, lyrical, imbued with subtle poetry, wisdom, artistry and ... romance (as well as the master himself, who is an impeccable combination of the creator and the created person).
Dolls do not have bright individual features, like eternity, holding them by invisible threads, as befits a Divine master, erased from their faces, like from mirrors, dust of turbidity, determined by personality, closer to heaven.
The faces are barely outlined, and the mood and image are created by the plasticity of the movement, light and almost elusive, by turning the head ... Without any moralizing, only by the harmony of images and love, as only real art can, puppets (and the angel also a symbol of a person’s aspiration to contact with his inner being) to the deepest and most important things in the world - not to forget about the Divine principle that lives inside everyone under the cover of individuality.
Birdies, jesters, clowns, circus performers are the favorite images of Roman Shustrov.
