In Belarus, for the first time in 2017, the death sentence was carried out, a 34-year-old resident of Gomel Sergei Vostrikov was shot, reports the Belarusian human rights center Viasna.
The Human Rights Center reports that on May 19, 2016, he was convicted in two separate cases of rape and murder and sentenced to death.
According to human rights activist Andrei Poludy, Vostrikov could have been shot from April 13 to April 29, 2017, as his last letter from the detention center dates back to April 13, and the regional court received a report on the execution of the death sentence on April 29.

The European Foreign Service called on Belarus to impose a moratorium on the death penalty. The corresponding statement is published on the website of the department.
“The continued use of the death penalty runs counter to the declared readiness of Belarus to cooperate with the international community, including the European Union, on this issue, and the willingness to consider introducing a moratorium on the use of the death penalty,” the service said.
Belarus is the only European country in which the death penalty remains. In 1996 a referendum was held in the republic, in which the majority of citizens voted to preserve the death penalty.
The Council of Europe, the European Union, the OSCE, Belarusian and international human rights organizations have repeatedly urged Minsk to impose a moratorium on the death penalty with its subsequent abolition.
