The rut is ... The origin of the word and its meaning in Russian
Everyone knows the basic meaning of the word "rut". But how to use it correctly in a figurative sense? Let's consider the well-known meanings of the word “gauge” and explain them with examples.
The origin of the word "rut"
The word "track" was formed at the same time with the invention of wheeled transport. In any case, there is nothing foreign in it - this is the word of the Old Russian language and has a similar sound and interpretation in all Slavic languages. The Ukrainian “Koliya”, the Belarusian “Kalyaina” and the Russian “Gauge” originated, apparently, from the word “Kolo”, which means “circle”. Most likely, this word also meant “wheel” - because the shape of the circle and the wheels are identical. And “Kolo” once was a long time ago synonymous with the word “sun”.
From the dictionaries you can find out that the track is a mark on the road left by the wheels of a moving car. Such a trace is formed in the places where the transport goes constantly, one by one. The trail left by the knurled wheels is deeply imprinted in the roadway.Especially quickly traces are formed in the mud, in clay soil or in the snow. After the car, driving on such a road, the track remains.
This makes it possible for other cars to drive on the track left by the previous car. So the trail of the wheels becomes deeper and deeper, breaking the road and making another path almost impossible. The last cars can no longer get out of the rut - the trail on the road reaches such a depth that the cars go "belly", stuck in the road dirt. The term “gauge” is also used in railway transport. There the word means the distance between the two rails.
Track in the design of the car
The technical definition of the word "track" is the width between the wheels of a car, which are located on the same axis. This parameter is measured in meters and is calculated as the distance from the middle of the tread of one wheel to the middle of the other.
In an ordinary car, the width of the track between the front and rear axle is the same. With equal distances between the treads of the front and rear axles, only the front wheels overcome the resistance when paving the way. They also lay the track, which will pass the rear pair of wheels, and then, perhaps, the next car.
In the automotive industry is important car gauge. It is no coincidence that the SUV gauge is always wider than the distance between the protectors of a standard city car. The more this parameter - the more stable the machine, the less likely it will turn over.
Rut in idioms
The image of the ruts turned out to be so convenient that it was often used in speech turns and in stable phrases - idioms. So, there is a fairly common figurative meaning of the term "gauge." This word is great for characterizing habit, routine, and everyday life. For example, the well-established path "school - institution - place of work - pension" - is a track that many of us fall into. To get out of the daily routine, you need to put a lot of effort.
Hence the phrase "enter the rut." The meaning of a phraseological unit is quite understandable: it means adjusting your life, going through life in the usual way. About a person who has an established life, we can say that he drives in his rut. But “getting out of the rut” means breaking the established habits, changing your life path.
Way of thinking
There is an opinion that any society has well-grooved tracks, which are used by many people who do not want to make their own way in life.It is much easier to move along such a social rut than to torment your own way in life. But, summing up the results of your life, you can safely say that you went your own way and built your own roads, and did not drive along a well-groomed rut.
