Warsaw, rising from the ashes, but keeping the pain of the past (Poland)

I have never flown to Warsaw as briefly as this time. Moreover, on business, and not at all. In the evening, he flew in from Vienna, where he met on the Azerbaijani theme in the OSCE, and flew off in Brussels in the evening, spending exactly 24 hours in the Polish capital. In my opinion, Warsaw can not be called beautiful. It was such before the fascists razed the city to the ground in 1943-1944. Even the fact that the city was rebuilt, using old photographs and drawings, still did not make Warsaw the way it was. The extremely gloomy events that took place here during the war years, hundreds of thousands of people who died, blood and violence - this will not soon erode from the aura of the Polish capital. Three years ago I went around the whole of Warsaw, meticulously visiting almost all the places associated with the existence of the Warsaw ghetto, with an uprising in it, with sending people to concentration camps. The article is called "Warsaw: a city that does not exist“Today I had a couple of hours after the meetings to walk in the center before going to the airport and fly to Brussels. And I found something interesting.

For many years now I have been going to get on this stalk, in the center of Warsaw. And never did I succeed. There are such hellish queues there that for the third time in a row over the last years I have been sighing heavily and postponing my visit to the future. For me, acquaintance with Warsaw began many years ago with this interesting building, called the "Palace of Science and Culture", donated by the Soviet Union in 1955 and is still the highest not only in Warsaw, but in Poland as a whole. The 175th bus from the airport stops here and the central railway station is nearby, so you can't help but find it.

This Stalin is the tourist center of the "new" Warsaw. As we know, during the war, Warsaw was completely destroyed: two uprisings cruelly suppressed by the Nazis (Jewish ghetto and the Polish uprising), then the battle for Warsaw in January 1945. After the war the city ceased to exist, 95% of all buildings were destroyed, from 1.4 400 thousand millions of Warsawians survived. The Poles thought even to build a new capital, in another place, but ultimately decided to rebuild the old city. They did it quite well, the center of Warsaw, built in the 1950s – 1960s, looks quite colorful, as if nothing had happened in 1945. But it is worth going a little to one side and you find yourself among the gray "Soviet" nine-story building. Alas, it was technically impossible to completely restore the city.
This time, near Stalin, I found an exhibition of old cars and buses, on closer inspection, it turned out not to be an exhibition at all. These are tourist buses and cars. For a certain amount, you can organize a city tour on them to dive deeper into it, the city, the past. Can the bus -

And you can on the old Zhiguli, they are Fiat-124. You will not be given the keys to rare cars, but the guide will gladly perform the function of not only a guide, but also a personal chauffeur.

As mentioned above, it is not easy to climb up this rare skyscraper. This is not a place where you can "run for half an hour." We must prepare in advance and be ready for an hour and more to stand in the queue just for tickets. I, alas, forever this extra hour is not ...

A sad monument to the writer Janusz Korczak, the creator of the Warsaw-based Orphans House, which he did not give up even in the face of death. In his orphanage there were children of various nationalities: Jews, Poles, Russians. When the Nazis captured Warsaw and the Jewish ghetto was created, the Germans offered the famous writer to leave the children and save themselves. He refused. When, in August 1942, an order came to deport the Orphan Home, Korchak went along with his assistant and friend Stefania Vilchinskaya, other educators and about 200 children to the station, from where they were sent to Treblinka in freight cars. He refused the last-minute freedom offered and chose to stay with the children, taking death with them in the gas chamber.

There is also one of the three remaining buildings in the ghetto. All the rest were blown up by the Germans, who suppressed the uprising in 1943. For more than 70 years, it has been worth it, reminding everyone of the 300,000 Jews killed by the Nazis just on these streets.
